Preservation & Historical Organizations

Preservation Utah works with these local and national organizations to fulfill our mission to preserve, protect, and promote Utah's historic built environment.

  • Barn Again Through demonstration projects, case studies, publications, technical assistance, and an awards program, BARN AGAIN!, has been chipping away at the widely accepted premise that new is better. The program has shown how historic barns can be adapted for new farming uses ranging from dairy, hog, and cattle operations to machinery or grain storage. Barn preservation techniques have proven to be cost-effective alternatives to tearing down the old barn and putting up a new building.
  • Advisory Council on Historic Preservation

    The mission of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is to promote the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our Nation's historic resources, and advise the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy.

  • Cultural Heritage Tourism This site has been developed as a resource for organizations and individuals who are developing, marketing or managing cultural heritage tourism attractions or programs.
  • Alliance of National Heritage Areas

    The Alliance of National Heritage Areas is a membership organization of the Congressionally designated National Heritage Areas committed to raising awareness among the Administration, Congress, its partners, and the public of the benefits of National Heritage Areas to the public sector and private citizens and fostering educational opportunities and partnerships among organizations in the heritage development field.

  • Farmington

    Farmington Historic Preservation Commission volunteers put together this Google Maps mashup of some of their historic sites.

  • National Alliance of Preservation Commissions

    The NAPC is organized to facilitate local commissions in providing information and education to each other. It is a forum for the exchange of ideas, a source of support, and a unifying body giving local commissions a national voice.

  • Great Basin National Heritage Area The Great Basin National Heritage Area is a geographical region encompassing White Pine County, Nevada and Millard County, Utah and adjacent Indian reservations that contains nationally significant archaeological, historical, cultural, natural and scenic features that are emblematic of the entire Great Basin Area.
  • Guide to Utah's Historic Architecture

    This online guide provides in-depth information on building types and styles commonly found in Utah between 1847-1947, and provides a glossary of terms and bibliography.

  • Logan

    Explore how Logan, has integrated historic preservation into their zoning ordinance and Department of Community Development.

  • National Historic Preservation Act (1966, 1980)

    This link provides access to a download of the National Historic Preservation Act.

  • National Trust for Historic Preservation

    Utah Heritage Foundation is a statewide partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Our common mission is helping people protect, enhance, and enjoy the places that matter to them.

  • National Park Service For information about grants, tax credits, tools for teaching, tours, laws and regulations and other federal assistance.
  • Park City Historical Society & Museum The Park City Historical Society and Museum is interested in preserving, protecting, and promoting Park City's history and heritage. They offer tours of the town, special events, and operate a museum on Main Street.
  • Salt Lake County Archives

    Historic architectural facade photographs, tax information, maps and building permits for buildings within Salt Lake County (including residential). They also have family and county government history information, as well as cemetery, mining and fire record collections.

  • Sanpete County Website for Sanpete area history, museums, photos and the Sanpete Heritage Council.
  • Partners for Sacred Places

    Partners is the only national, non-sectarian, non-profit organization devoted to helping congregations and their communities sustain and actively use older and historic sacred places.

  • National Register of Historic Places homepage

    The homepage for the National Park Service website explaining what the Register is and how it works to preserve America's historical treasures.

  • Mormon Pioneer National Heritage Area

    Begin a a heritage adventure that will take you through one or more of five uniquely Western heritage areas, defined in a distinctly local way, with a delightful blend of art galleries and artisan studios, heritage lodging, western adventures, historic sites, celebrations, antiques and indigenous foods.

  • Preservation Action Utah Heritage Foundation works with Preservation Action to lobby our congressional delegation on federal preservation issues.
  • National Register of Historic Places database

    The National Register of Historic Places is the official federal list of properties that are significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, or engineering. Click for Utah's complete list, with photos and original documents.

  • Recent Past Preservation Network For those unfamiliar with the organization, RPPN ("rippen") is a valuable resource for building public education and awareness of often misunderstood and underappreciated resources - those of the Recent Past. We generally define the recent past as a moving window of approximately fifty years time. Specifically, we cover those buildings that are not considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places because the structures are less than fifty years old. These are the very buildings and landscapes that need the most protection.
  • Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation

    These are the guidelines for how to preserve, rehabilitate, and live in historic buildings.

  • Salt Lake City Historic Preservation Program
