With your help, we can save the historic fabric that makes our neighborhoods vibrant and meaningful.
Join us at the "Windows Into Time" gala to celebrate the stories embedded in Utah's past and help us safeguard these treasures for the future. Together, we can ensure that our shared history continues to inspire, educate, and connect future generations.
About The Clubhouse
"That the literary club’s building will remain on South Temple is proof that it’s possible to save our most important artifacts." - Peg McEntee, SL Trib, April 22, 2013
The Ladies’ Literary Club moved into "The House that the Women Built" at 850 E South Temple on April 25, 1913 (the building was constructed from 1911 to 1913). This building symbolized a revolutionary concept at the time, being commissioned by the women themselves. Women's clubs, such as the Ladies' Literary Club, played crucial roles in various reforms, including education, child labor, and women's suffrage and were instrumental in creating public libraries.
The building, designed by the local architecture firm Ware and Treganza, is considered one of Salt Lake City’s finest examples of Prairie-style architecture. Walter E. Ware and Alberto O. Treganza won the commission through a design competition, bringing their vision to life with this elegant structure.
Architecture Details:
- Characterized by its restrained ornamentation, the building features exquisite leaded glass windows and intricate wood inlay on the porch ceiling, showcasing the refined elements of the Prairie style.
- The total cost for the building was $32,507.94, with $7,500.00 for the property and $25,007.94 for the construction.
- Ware and Treganza designed several other notable landmarks in Salt Lake City, including the Walker Mansion on South Temple and the Commercial Club on Exchange Place.
In 2013, the Ladies’ Literary Club gifted the building to the Utah Heritage Foundation (now Preservation Utah) to ensure its preservation. In 2016, Preservation Utah sold the historic Clubhouse to the creatives behind Photo Collective Studios, marking a new chapter for this iconic building. This sale aimed to ensure that the Clubhouse, located on South Temple, would remain a vibrant cultural and community space.
